Ask a developer what they do and most will hand you a string of tools and frameworks that means nothing outside the industry. So we tried something different. We told a few of our developers one rule: explain your job to someone who's never written a line of code, no tech words allowed. Here's what came back.
Krishanth: "I'm someone who helps turn ideas into reality. I work with clients to understand what they need and then build the software to make it happen."
Heshan: "I build the parts of websites and apps that people actually see and interact with, like the buttons, pages and everything in between. My job is to make sure it looks good, feels smooth to use and works reliably, while also making sure it connects properly with everything happening behind the scenes."
Akalanka: "Making sure the foundations of the apps people use stay strong, while solving their pain points."
Deleema: "I design, build and improve the software services that power an online platform. The systems I work on handle tens of millions of requests a day, aiming to serve almost all of them within 100 milliseconds. I also help keep product details, prices and stock accurate as they update by the million, every single day."
Hasindu: "If you order a bathtub online and a tea cup turns up instead, that's probably on me."
Nobody on this list said "idempotent endpoints" or "container orchestration" once. And somehow the dev who skipped every buzzword explained his job better than most job postings manage in three paragraphs.
Turns out clarity beats vocabulary every time.
